I'm hoping you all can help. I'm not sure what caused it but I think it was Windows update. I was editing a document in Word perfect and Windows reported updates were ready for your computer, so I clicked to install the updates. The computer restarted and now I have a blue screen with the message...

Windows Logon System Process terminated unexpectedly with a bunch of numbers and then...
The System has shut down.

This happens in all boot options. Is there any way to fix it without re-installing Windows XP and losing all my files.

Thanks
Sweetz

Microsoft and their service packs....

This error is due to a failed installation of SP3 or a security patch.
Service Packs and Hotfixes can be removed using the Windows XP Recovery Console. Please Note You will need a Retail Version of XP HOME or Professional depending on your installed operating system. An OEM restore disk will not work.

Boot to your XP CD.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

Select Your Windows Installation... Usually 1
Type admin password, if you don't have an admin password hit enter.

First you will need to identify the Service Pack or Hotfix(s) that may be causing the issue. You may need to have paper and pen handy for this step since many hotfixes are installed at once.

At the command prompt type:
DIR $*
This command lists all the folders named $NTUinstall....
Write down all the ntuninstall### matching the dates when your issue started. When you have collected all the hotfix uninstallers for that date...

You will then need to change to the directory of the first installed hotifx using the syntax below..
CHDIR $NTUninstallKB12345$\spuninst (where 1234 is the KB hot fix number)

To remove the hotfix you will need to execute the spuninst.txt file using the command below.
BATCH spuninst.txt

Disreguard any error messages.
Restart your computer. If Windows still fails to load you will repeat this step removing the next hotfix on your list. Restart after each hotfix removal until Windows loads.

After Windows loads it is a good idea to run SFC to replace any missing or damaged Windows files.

This utility is accessed from a command prompt using the syntax below.
SFC /SCANNOW
